In this article, the novel «Night Roads» by G. Gazdanov is examined considering the phenomenon of catharsis. Since in the novel the tragedy represents itself as a mass, depersonalizing process bordering on absurdity, meanness and repulsion, the tragic conflict and catharsis induced by it appear to be nonclassical. This makes a stark contrast to the traditional concentration of catharsis in the leading character’s image, in a single storyline, or in particular episodes, mainly in the denouement of a classical tragedy.
