Dostoyevsky's idea about the special mission of Russia, which should fulfill its historical role of the unification of the Slavic world, determines the strategy of the text in «The writer's diary» written in 1877. Communicative peculiarities of the text that reflect the rhythm of the real life of the country involved in a military conflict are shaped by its rhetoric and evocative nature. It is expressed by the use of «someone else's words» as the object of the debate, and by explaining the etymology and meaning of certain words and expressions. Style heterogeneity of the narrative creates the effect of a live communication with the reader, because Dostoevsky himself, by including letters to the editor into the text, considered readers' responses as one of the main conditions for the functioning of the «Diary».
