The paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental researches performed at the Institute for Problems of Mechanics in the field of geomechanics of oil and gas wells. The key role of the stress that arises in the vicinity of wells in the formation of the filtration properties of the reservoir and also wellbore stability is shown. A new approach to the solution of geomechanical problems, based on tests of rock samples from the productive and the enclosing strata on the unique experimental test system TSTUL is suggested.
