Coupled discrete-continua simulation makes it possible to combine the advantages of the both approaches by using the grid method for domains with small deformation and the method of particles in the region of strong deformation. The coupling interface is assumed to be plane and is given at the stage of problem formulation. Centers of particles at the interface are rigidly connected to the corresponding edges of the grid. Information exchange between the methods is performed by passing the positions and velocities of the grid region of the sample to the particles at the interface, as well as by using the forces acting on these particles from the discrete part, to calculate the acceleration of the nodes. The application of the proposed approach for studying the processes in the contact zone in sliding friction is discussed.
