The article is focused on the quality of education in the field of foreign language in non-linguistic higher educational institutions. The authors' conclusions are based on the students' answers to the questions of a specifically designed questionnaire. The questionnaire identifies the main components of the foreign language competence: motivational, cognitive, operational, activity-based and reflective. It also reveals the students' attitude to the development of certain skills and abilities in the course of learning a foreign language. A comparison is made concerning the formation of foreign language competence for students of different non-linguistic profiles and higher educational institutions.
