Abstract
The main versions of the origins of the god Dionysus and his cult are considered. Examination of the current points of view on this issue demonstrates that the sacral practice of Dionysian cult and its mythology were based on the ideas of a dying-and-rising god that were universally adopted in traditional societies. However, the Minoan and Mycenaean sacral traditions were of the highest importance in its formation. Through intensive cross-cultural and inter-ethnic contacts between the Greeks and peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean area the cult of Dionysus was influenced by mythologies of the Middle East, Asia Minor and Thrace.
