This paper examines literary and archaeological sources concerning the temple of Athena Assesia. The reports of Herodotus, Polyaenus, Stephen of Byzantium, Herodian and results of excavation at Miletus are analysed. On the basis of examination of literary and archaeological sources, the author makes his conclusions about chronology of the archaic temple of Athena, and also on the reliability of Herodotus’ report concerning the war between Miletus and Alyattes, the king of Lydia. |
