The article deals with the notion of security in the writings of ancient Roman historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus (the 1st and the 2nd centuries). The assumption has been made that Tacitus’ worldview was influenced by his contemporaries, especially Quintilian and Pliny the Younger. The semantic field of the concept “security” (securitas, tutum, tranquilitas) in Tacitus’ works has been defined. The historian’s attitude to the sources and components of the state stability, social security and international security have been analyzed.
