The authors consider the possibility of using Roman face-mask helmets in combat. Most researchers believe such helmets were ceremonial or were intended for use in the cavalry sports (hippika gymnasia). Based on iconographic sources and experimental archaeology, the authors conclude that Roman face-mask helmets, at least those made in the 1st century AD, could be worn in battle. |
