This paper presents an analysis of the category of quantity in Arabic, English and Tatar, which includes quite a few vestigial phenomena. The contradictions within the category of number are manifested in the phenomenon of collectivity, in the dual number preserved in the Semitic languages, in the extensive synonymic series ranks of some lexical units, reflecting the specificity of a society's life during a certain epoch. This reflects the nature of the speakers, their perception of the world, culture and history.
