The report presents the results of studies of fundamental and applied problems of gas detonation, done in the major research centers in Russia. It covers such important for theory and practice is-sues as critical conditions for direct initiation of detonation by shock waves, arising due to concentrated energy supply by the explosion or by the electrical discharge, by the action of the piston, by the rotation or deformation of the walls that limit the amount of combustible mixture. Special attention in the report is given to the research of the initiation, propagation and stabilization of the detonation in a supersonic flow of a combustible gas mixture.
