Abstract
Experimental works on the research of evolution of large-scale perturbations and turbulent mixing in liquid and gaseous media during the growth of hydrodynamic instabilities are reviewed. In particular, it is shown that growth of perturbations and turbulent mixing in gases is sensitive to Mach number of the shock wave; the character of the gas front penetration into the liquid is not changed as the Reynolds number of flow increases from 5?105 to 107; change of the sign of Atwood number from positive to negative causes stop of the gas front penetration into the liquid, whereas the mixing zone width is expanded under inertia.
