Abstract
Results of direct numerical simulation (DNS) of transitional and turbulent regimes of air natural convection developing at a heated vertical plate are presented. The computations have been performed under conditions of experiments known from the literature. Two computational approaches were used: Temporal (Time-developing) DNS (TDNS) and Spatial DNS (SDNS). The potential of both the approaches for reproducing the flow under consideration has been analyzed. Influence of initial disturbances on laminar-turbulent transition in the free-convection boundary layer is discussed. A comparison of averaged and pulsating components of the flow fields computed with experimental data and findings of numerical studies of other authors has demonstrated good agreement of the results.
