The problem of intersonic movement of a punch along the boundary of an elastic half-space is considered. The existence of a critical velocity which is lower than the velocity of longitudinal waves but higher than the velocity of transverse waves is shown. The nature of stress and strain changes when passing through this velocity. A physical interpretation of the velocity is associated with the existence of supersonic surface waves of Rayleigh type. |
