Stability of a multi-span fixed column on foil bearing is examined. The eigenvalue problem leads to the transcendental characteristic equation, the solution of which by the analytical and numerical methods is connected with significant difficulties. It is proposed to determine critical forces with the help of visualization of the graph of the left side of the equation, using a computer. A test example illustrates the high accuracy of the obtained critical forces. A specific example demonstrating the potential of the proposed algorithm is given.
