A general approach to the implementation of models of elasticity and plasticity of isotropic media within the framework of numerical discrete element method is proposed. The approach is based on building element interaction potentials/forces, which provide the response of element ensemble corresponding to the response of the simulated solid. The developed formalism makes possible the realization of various rheological models in the frame of the particle method to study deformation and fracture of solid-phase media of various nature.
