A mathematical model describing small oscillations along the x-axis in a periodic combined medium consisting of mutually alternating layers of a viscoelastic material and a viscous compressible fluid is considered. For this model, a homogenized model is developed and the spectral properties of a limiting problem corresponding to the homogenized model are studied. The spectral properties are compared for the original viscoelastic material without fluid and for the limiting viscoelastic material with long-term memory corresponding to the combined layered material.
