An elastic solid undergoing phase transformations or oxidizing-type chemical reactions is studied in terms of configuration forces. The conditions on the moving interfaces are formulated. The interconnections between the strains at the interface, interface velocity and orientation are examined. An expression of the chemical affinity tensor is derived. A kinetic equation determining the front propagation velocity of chemical reactions is derived as a function of the normal components of the chemical affinity tensor. Similarities and differences in conditions on the inter-phase boundaries and chemical reaction fronts are discussed.
