In works by F.L. Chernous'ko and his disciples the control problem of vibrations of mechanical systems was solved on the basis of using the Pontryagin maximum principle. In the present report the generalized Gauss principle is applied to controlling the vibrations of a cantilever. This makes it possible to associate a boundary problem to a non-holonomic mechanics problem of imposing high-order constraints. A generalized boundary-value problem is formulated and solved to find an impact-free controlling force. The calculation results are presented.
