Abstract
Based on physical meso-mechanics and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, the theory of nonlinear waves of localized plastic deformation (NWLPD) in a deformed solid was developed as a multilevel hierarchically-organized system. Propagation of localized-plastic deformation waves of all types in a deformed solid deteriorates its mechanical properties. Special treatment of the surface layers of solids prevents the formation of NWLPD and considerably improves their mechanical properties.
