The level of concentration of businesses in an area impacts the competition and consequently the effectiveness of the market economy as a whole. This article analyses current approaches to assessing business concentration processes and their impact on competition. The authors point out the importance of monitoring the situation in terms of excessive concentration of businesses in a particular sector, as well as the necessity to establish indicators measuring the level of concentration and to form an approach to how to regulate the process. A number of examples are given of how the level of concentration of businesses is monitored and regulated by the governments in developed countries. This article also examines how the level of concentration of businesses impacts the effectiveness of business development in retail sector. |
