Historical memory is a key phenomenon that determined the way how the oral historical tradition was formed and existed in preliterate societies. Transition to a written culture, in the framework of which the first early historical descriptions were produced, was accompanied by a radical rethinking and transformation of the oral tradition. To reconstruct the history of the European peoples during the preliterate times, including ancient Rus, it is vitally important to identify the mechanisms of turning the oral tradition into a written historiographic text.
