This article provides an overview and analysis of the current economic and mathematical tools used for modelling the functioning of complex economic systems. Particular attention is given to the notion of complexity of the systems. Simulation methodology applied in the study of complex systems involves agent - based modelling, a modern, dynamically developing type of numerical simulation. We describe different approaches to the measurability of system complexity and analyze the existing principles of modelling of such objects. A number of examples demonstrate the functioning of some models.
