Based on the results of the author's sociological research, the initiation of psychoactive substances use by students is considered, in particular, the prevalence of smoking among high school students and students of the city of Kirov. The research shows that currently every 5th student smokes daily and every 10th is addicted to hookah. According to our observations, gender-specific distinctions in the use of tobacco by young people are blurred. An analysis is given of the results of similar previous research in Russia and abroad.
