Abstract
The article presents the main ideas of Simeon of Polotsk, one of the first thinkers to propose an ideological justification of the need of enlightened absolutism for Russia. By introducing the image of the «Sun Tsar», Simeon of Polotsk considered a strong monarchy to be the principal defender of the Orthodox faith. In the context of the emerging absolutism, Ordin-Nashchokin advocated the improvement of the country's economy through protectionism and some economic independence of local authorities.
