Francesco Altoviti's letter is an example of the accusatory literature aimed against the Dominican preacher Girolamo Savonarola. This type of literature was common in Florence in the late 15th century. The writing has a predominantly political orientation. The author, while criticizing the new prophet-reformer, expresses one of the greatest fears of the citizens: the fear to lose " the Florentine freedom " and get a new tyrant. |
