The paper deals with the issue of how Russian scientists understand the phenomenon of media criticism. One of the reasons for inconsistency of identifying the borders of this definition both in the professional and scientific community is that there are a lot of sources that keep enriching this field of journalism. Among them are other types of criticism, various branches of science, press, and blog sphere. It is possible to define this phenomenon through a system of attributive qualities of the concept of media criticism, among which is the efficiency of its inventors; a combination of information and assessment; a special subject - Mass Media Activity; publicity etc.
