This article analyzes the interpretation of the theme of family and family line in the works of V. Aksenov, L. Ulitskaya and in modern mass literature. The author uses the comparative-historical and integral method of analysis of a literary work. It has been established that the theme of the family line in modern prose is localized in the «family» stories as «small» forms of family line history. The concept of «family line» implies the traditional values: the importance of genetic memory, home, family, procreation, responsibility to the ancestors and to future generations. The category of family line is extended by introducing parallel storylines of children born out of wedlock and the motifs of «serial monogamy», «alleged paternity» in the novels of contemporary fiction writers. Most often, the theme of family line degeneration in modern prose is expressed through the violation of moral norms by protagonists, their breaking away from the roots and from the past. This theme is also directly connected with the motif of ancestral curse.
