Abstract
The aim of the article is to analyze language patterns of the contrastive semantic field «knowing - not knowing» in modern English. The analysis in based on dictionary entries. It is shown that the meaning of the verb «to know» can be considered as the minimal semantic unit of this field. Interaction of meanings in patterns creates contexts of knowledge in which semantic limitations and extensions can be exposed.
