In this paper, we examine the basic concepts of blood and spiritual brotherhood in order to clarify the features of their use and functioning in Gregory of Tours’ «History of the Franks», Bede’s «Ecclesiastical History of the English People» and Paul the Deacon's «History of the Lombards». Based on the statistical analysis, the semantics of the terms in these works is elaborated. With the help of contextual analysis the authors discuss the characteristics of constitution and the basic functions of the blood and spiritual kinship, as well as its perception during the Early Middle Ages.
