The paper examines the attitudes of Greek intellectuals of the 2nd-3rd centuries AD to Rome and Roman rule, with special attention being paid to methodological difficulties of the research. The impact of several factors on the percep- tion has been explored. The factors include cultural identity, specific methods of Roman control over Greece, as well as the authors' social origin and status. In our opinion, some differences in the Greek intellectuals’ judgments on Rome and Roman rulers could be explained by the specifics of the authors' social standing and career vicissitudes.
