During the Civil War, Soviet Russia practiced compulsory enlistment into the Red Army. However, many draftees avoided joining the army initially or became deserters subsequently. The article analyzes the causes of this tendency and examines how the Soviet authorities tried to prevent desertion and organize enlistment. It is shown that to enlist soldiers, authorities used persuasion, coercion, and repressions. |
