The paper analyzes the place of the Gulf region in the system of international relations and the factors that contri- bute to the region's role in world politics. The stages of its formation and development as an independent subject of geopolitics are considered. The author examines the correlation of forces in the region and the growing role of the three regional powers acting as regional centers: Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, as well as the regional organization, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Particular attention is given to the policy of the leading world powers in respect of the Gulf region. The article discusses the relations between the GCC, the USA, EU and NATO, which are actively in- volved in ensuring the national security of this organization's member states.
