The paper is based on the material of literature, media, Internet and field records. It discusses the functioning of the nickname referring to the residents of Tver and the Tver region - tverskie kozly (male goats of Tver). In the 20th century this variant displaced the nickname kozlyatniki (i.e. people who have something to do with goats), the latter associated with the motifs of jokes. At present, the nickname tverskie kozly is related to historical legends, which are widely covered in local media. It also reflects the stereotype of alleged obstinacy of the residents of Tver and the Tver region. This stereo- type is associated with the actual elements of the “cultural local text” of Tver and forms the local identity.
