The paper examines the views of contemporaries on the work of Vsevolod Solovyov, a famous Russian fiction writer of the turn of the 20th century. On the basis of the analysis of the most significant works dedicated to the under- standing of the novelist’s career in literature, the author comes to the conclusion that literary and critical reception of his legacy was rather ambiguous. N.A. Engelhardt, A.A. Izmailov and P.V. Bykov characterized the prose writer’s literary activity as extremely positive. The views of A.M. Skabichevsky and N. Sokolov, on the contrary, were unfa- vorable and they spoke disparagingly of the writer’s artistic method. In the articles by K.P. Medvedsky who often wrote under the pen name K. Petrov, diametrically opposite assessments of the writer’s creative work are presented.
