The article presents problems of the translator’s reception of the Russian national character on material of French translations of the Turgenev’s cycle «A Sportsman Sketches» of the XIX-XX centuries. The role of comments in disclosure of the author's concept of the Russian national character is investigated, their types are analyzed. The comparative contrastive analysis of texts shows that complexity of an explanation of the Russian character by the French authors was that the aspiration to comprehend its «secret» demanded introduction of considerable data on features of the Russian reality which formed national consciousness of the Russian person. The analysis of translator’s comments of the XIX century showed that the explanation of realities of the Russian life prevails in the, and in the comments of the XX century which kept this tendency, much attention is paid to the linguistic realities reflecting specifics of reception of the Russian national character.
