Abstract
The purpose of the article is to analyse distinctive national features which are typical for the German characters created by N. Gogol, and also to define the role of traditional stereotypes in classic’s works. In the course of the research the author used dialectic and metaphysical methods, methods of the analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, descriptive, cultural-historic, comparative-contrastive and psychological methods. The author comes to the conclusion that N. Gogol refers to accuracy, persistence, prudence, thrift, restraint and arrogance as the most typical German qualities. At the same time the bearers of the above mentioned stereotypic features put in an alien cultural environment seek for isolation which is mainly achieved by means of a voluntarily created linguistic barrier. The fundamental reason for bringing in the German characters is Gogol’s intention to emphasise the distinctive features of the Russian national character and to prove the necessity of putting an end to the blind worship of foreign culture.
