In this article we examine the author’s version of the national cultural code in the novel through the prism of the family relations. There has been noticed the evolution of the inner world of the main character who changed the place of living. There have been analyzed the peculiarities of the world perception by the English and the French on the background of the social environment. There have been singled out moral and social principles and regulations inside these two national groups. Thus, the general qualities belonging to this or that national group were proved. The author of the novel also pays attention to the unofficial national symbols which saturate the plot.
