The paper presents an experience of a comparative analysis of the portrait characteristics of the heroes of the novels «The Idiot» by F.M. Dostoyevsky and «Group Portrait with lady» by H. B?ll - Prince Myshkin and Boris Koltovsky respectively - for the purpose of identifying the signs of the literary influence of the Russian classical author on the creative principles of the German writer. The analysis showed that the presence of allusions in «Group Portrait with Lady» from Dostoyevsky’s novel is connected with the fact that the writers set the same artistic tasks - to portray the «ideal», positively beautiful person. Besides the external similarities, the images of Myshkin and Koltovsky are also brought together by the similar functions - to promote moral self-discovery and, in part, transfiguration of others.
