The article analyzes the elements of the precedent texts of German and English classical literaure in P.D. Boborykin’s feuilletons published in the journal "The Library for Reading". The study defines the reasons for Boborykin’s resorting to works of foreign literature, the most important of which are a long period of studying and living abroad and a deep perception of the main elements of the Western reality. Richness of the elements of the precedent texts in Boborykin’s feuilletons is a means of the young writer’s self-positioning. The research reveals the most frequent precedent texts in the satirical articles of "The Library for Reading", which are the precedent texts from Shakespeare’s, C.Marlowe’s, H. Heine’s, Goethe’s, Schiller’s and Dante Alighieri’s works. Elements of the precedent texts of these authors fulfill the emotive function, enhancing the emotional influence of the feuilleton images upon the reader, helping to percept the idea-content of the author's text, forming the extensive historical, event-trigger, literary context.
