The article focuses on the steampunk as a literary phenomenon. On the bases of Difference Engine by W. Gibson and B. Sterling, Perdido Street Station by Ch. Mi?ville, and The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer by N. Stephenson, author of the article defined the place of steampunk in a modern literature. Connection between steampunk, the neo-Victorian and fantastic literature was proved. To achieve the scope of the research, the following methods of literary analysis were used: typological method, cultural and historical method, comparative method and intertextual analysis. Through the careful analyses of the steampunk novels, the author of the article concludes that steampunk takes specific place in a modern literature. It belongs to a new formation, combining the elements of science fiction, alternate history, dystopia, fantasy, and neo-Victorian literature. This article outlines the vectors of steampunk research. It opens new prospects for steampunk genre peculiarities research.
