Abstract
The aim of the article is the analysis of nature depicting and the artistic interpretation of the garden. The garden is considered to be a part of wild nature in the English Victorian realistic novel (based on Elizabeth Gaskell’s novels). The usage of history and culture method, descriptive and analytical ones leads to the following findings. The texts of Gaskell’s realistic novels abound with descriptions of the landscape. This fact reflects aesthetic perception of nature by the Victorians. The garden represents the topos of nature and human’s unity, the fusion of natural and artificial. Englishness as the feature of national mentality is found in the ability of seeing the beauty of nature, admiring and enjoying it. Such attitude towards the garden, landscape and nature in general is the means of aesthetic decoration of everyday life.
