Abstract
The article analyses the English translations of the Bible made in the XVI - beginning of XVII century. The author considers the creation of the English Bibles in the context of religious and political situation of that time, characterised by the formation of Protestant ideology and the spread of protestantism. Using textual approach, the author shows that all translations of the Holy Scriptures of this period (Coverdale’s Bible (1535), Matthew's Bible (1537), Taverner's Bible (1539), The Great Bible (1539), The Geneva Bible (1560), The Bishop’s Bible (1568)) copied the translation which has been carried out by W. Tyndale in 1526-1534. Tyndale’s translation of the Bible into English formed the major part of the King James Bible otherwise called Authorized Version. The article contains comparisons of the most known fragments in English translations of the Bible.
