The article discusses the creativity of the contemporary Austrian writer A. Grill in the context of the "newest" Austrian literature on the turn of the century - the beginning of the 20th century. Methodological guidelines that the author keeps to are based on the traditional historical and cultural approach to literature, which combines the experience of classical literature, both domestic and foreign. The novel by A. Grill "Useful and Beautiful» ("Das Sch?ne und das Notwendige", 2010) tells the story of a profitable "creative" business of two young people in an era of economic crisis. Written in the spirit of the Austrian tradition this "ironic imagination" has much in common with the genre of the picaresque novel, in addition, "inclusion" of popular science style in the text of the narrative allows to talk about "hybrid discourse", a characteristic feature of Austrian literature of the period.
