The object of study is the translator as the character of modern Russian prose. The object of research are works of М. Shishkin, Е. Chizhov, L. Ulitskaya, I. Efimov, A. Chernobrovkin and others. The purpose of the work is to characterise the structure of the image, its typological features, principes of plot organisation, complex of ideas, which are due to introduction of such character intonarration. Shown, that the translator acts as a mediator in the intercultural dialogue. Special accent made on the translation of the artistic work, including the interlinear translation. Revealed, that for works about translators discountity of narration, the insert construction are characteristic, which ar due to their profession. Shown mythological origins of the plot about the translator - parabel about the Babylon tower and the legend about the prophet Daniel, who explained the meaning of the incription at the Valtalasar’s feast. They determined 2 understandings of the function of translation - overcoming of the language diversity and revealing the secret meaning. Thereby explained the semantic of words «translator» and «interpreter» in understanding of modern authors.
