The article is devoted to the book ‘Russia in the shadows’ by Herbert Wells, which was written by him after his visit to Soviet Russia in 1920. The aim of the article is to research basic features of the book as a historical source of everyday life. In compliance with it the methods of the historical analysis are determined. As a result of the conducted research the author has come to the conclusion that this historical source has three main features. The first one is that the book about Russian events was written by the Englishmen. The next is that Herbert Wells was in Russia only for two weeks. Finally, the author was in Russia even before, which leaves a mark on the narration. On the whole, the book is a valuable and informative source of Russian everyday life.
