The article analyses similes as a means of creating portrait characteristics in Michail Bulgakov’s stories «Heart of a Dog», «The Fatal Eggs», «Diaboliad». As a result of research, a conclusion is made that this thrope is specific of Bulgakov as a writer, and it is widely used to describe his characters’ appearance and look (50% author’s similes of all 42 similes). This common usage of author’s similes is very typical of Mikhail Bulgakov’s language which enables him to create colourful and expressive portrait characteristics as well as clearly show his attitude to his literary characters.
