This article is aimed at improving the approaches to the establishment of the institute of mediation as one of the areas in the development of the Russian legal system and of social partnership. It is important to introduce mediation techniques in the legal practice by training members of the legal professions to use this method. Professional development and additional professional education of lawyers in the area of application of mediation techniques is definitely a straightforward, but not the only way to integrate mediation into legal practice. Lawyers should get the initial knowledge during their studies at the law faculty, therefore, mediation competency should be included in the list of core competencies to be developed during the preparation of future lawyers in higher education institutions.
