Abstract
The paper considers the problem of dating of the Lelantine war, one of the most mysterious conflicts of the Archaic period. To solve this problem, researchers typically use the data of archaic Greek poetry, in particular, Hesiod’s "Works and Days" and Archilochus’ poems. At the same time, there are almost no researchers who recognize the legitimacy of the use of the works of Theognis of Megara for dating the Lelantine war. Theognis of Megara was a poet who for the first time in the ancient tradition mentioned the valley, which had become the cause of the conflict. We revise the data according to which Hesiod and Archilochus can be considered the contemporaries of the Lelantine war. We also argue that Theognis' works can be used for the dating of the conflict in Euboea in a wide temporal framework - from the end of the 8th century to the first quarter of the 4th century B.C.
