Abstract
The article analyzes the position of Brachylles as epistates in Sparta after the battle of Sellasia. In the author’s opinion, the appointment of epistates was an allies’ compromise, while Brachylles had no actual military powers. He held his post for several months and left it before the death of the Macedonian King Antigonus Doson. The appointment of epistates in Sparta should not be considered in the context of strengthening of the Macedonian dictate at the end of the third century B.C.
